In mid-February 1968, the California Ford Dealers began to market a factory-built, limited-edition Mustang, called the GT/CS, or “California Special“. The hope was for a targeted production run of 5,000; however, only 4118 were made, including 251 units that were remarketed in Denver, Colorado, as “High Country Special ’68”. Ford agreed to manufacture 5,500 of the cars in the San Jose plant only and they would be the CG/CS and High Country Specials. In the end, there were a total of 4,118 GT/CS mustangs produced in 1968. Special parts for the cars were made in the A.O. Smith and A.G. Sterns Company plants and shipped to the San Jose plant for assembly.

California Special Mustang – Concours Winner | GT/CS Mustang For Sale During the ’68 model year, Ford retired the 289 in favor of the F-code two-barrel, 210-hp 302. Billed as the Challenger Special V-8 in the Mustang was another 302, the J-code four-barrel, 10:1 engine that produced 230 horsepower. Beyond the small-block options, Ford offered three big-block V-8s for Mustang in 1968.
